Insert Rocky IV quote here

Lord kaldor Draigo is the Supreme Grand Master of the Grey Knights. He is the top of that food chain. He got that honor through a lot of bad assery. He drove M’Kar (the demon who has been kicked around by Calgar, Mephiston, Ventris, Sicarius and it seems everyone else in the 40K universe) back to the warp as a Captain, then he did it again as a Master. He also carved his name in Moratrion's heart during a battle and a host of other stuff. All this lead him to his Supreme Grand Master title. However, when he faced M’kar again of course he won, but was cast into the warp by the demon. He now walks the realm of Chaos kicking demon ass, until he is magically brought out to the real world to fight and then is pulled back into the warp after the battle. Wait. He walks the realm of Chaos by himself and kills everything in his path. Then he gets out to fight alongside Grey Knights only to go away after the battle. Wait a minute that is just a ridiculous story. I get they want him to be a 40K tough guy, but seriously? Just write him up as a colossal demon slayer and be done with it. This whole, he walks the long lonely road constantly fighting demons only to escape and be drug back again, is lame.  Well at least his character is better than his background.

He is the third (and last) Grey Knight character with the "last man standing" or "I'm all alone and angry"
This drawing is also better than his horrible backstory.

Draigo has a spectacular stat line. WS 7, BS 6, strength, toughness and initiative 5, wounds and attacks of 4, leadership 10 and a 2+/3++ save. He has the Grey Knight shenanigans along with the Grand Master rules. He is psy level 2 with the added power Sanctified Flame. He is fearless and has eternal warrior and is the Lord of Titan. He has Terminator armor, a storm shield all the usual Grey Knight gear, the Titan Sword and even keeps his storm bolter. He is not an Independent Character, but he really doesn’t need to be. He is the definition of man gang. Sure this makes him very pricey, think Land Raider with multi-melta and storm bolter in points. He is pricey, but very worth it for many Grey Knight players.
Sanctified Flame- is a shooting power. It is a S 5 AP- template. It wounds demons on a 2+. I don’t hate this as S 5 template is annoying against most infantry. Sure it is AP-, but I am from the camp of cause as many wounds as possible and force the saves. Quantity over quality and this power does that.
Titan Sword- is a master crafted force weapon. It also has the Demonbane ability (force LD checks to demons to make them disappear) and against demons, psykers and any unit that these are in, it is a S 10 weapon. Ouch! Initiative 5, grenades and a S 10 weapon vs any demon, psyker or squad with them attached is pretty awesome to have; especially, with the prevalence of Rune Priests and Liberians around these days.
Lord of Titan- is what makes this guy popular with a certain circle of Grey Knight players. It allows for Paladins to be taken as troops. Yup those two wound Terminators with the higher price tag and wound allocation silliness. Yup those can be troops with Draigo.
Yeah the rules and stats for this guy are so much better than his story. He has the potential to be a beast. Being straight strength, toughness and initiative 5 is very nice against almost everything. Add in the Hammerhand power and look out everything besides Land Raiders.  Oh yeah the 2+/3++ save is just as annoying as it gives him a descent defense alongside the toughness 5 and eternal warrior. Being a one man Terminator does pull some of the awesomeness out of him since he’ll need to carjack vehicles, walk or deep strike to get where he is going. Having the added abilities of a Grand Master is never bad since he can give scout, scoring or re-rolls to d3 units. Having Paladins as troops can be fun, and opens up options for other units to be taken from the Elite slot. Plus that sword is just brutal against anything from the warp or that channels it. I also love his shooting power, but I like flamer templates that are S 5 or higher.
The point cost is the only thing that would keep me from using Draigo. Personally I would rather have a Land Raider than a guy who costs as much. Sure his sword is awesome sauce and Paladins as troops could be fun, and many think they are.  The one man gang aspect is also annoying since he has potential to deep strike wrong or needs a transport bought for him, thus upping his cost more. A regular grand Master is cheaper and can do almost as much as Draigo. Draigo is a badass, but just too expensive for my liking.

ADDENDUM!!!!!!!!!

It looks like Draigo is an Independent Character! His army list entry says no but his background page says yes. Well at least in my codex. I guess his isn't an army of one. He can benefit from being in a squad and doesn't need his own transport. One typo isn't enough for me to buy a new book, but it is comical that it is wrong, or is it?  Meh, either way he is still too rich for my tastes.

  1. You may want to double check your codex. Draigo actually does have the independent special character rule, so he can join squads.

  2. Holy crap my codex has it under his background page, but not his army list page. Weird!

Who would have thought that therewould be a glaring mistake like that in a G.W. publication.

  3. How can you say they would make an error in a codex. My ork codex is just fine and there is not a mistake to be seen :)

  4. You should check out the GW FAQ on Grey Knights. The flamer power I believe got modified to AP4 which makes it somewhat better.
