The Doctor Who 50th is
just a few days away.
Now if you know nothing or care nothing for Doctor Who
then you will feel the same about this post.
Myself, I have enjoyed the Doctor’s
trips through space and time for many years. Now I’m geared with my sonic, slick
new duds, and I am eagerly awaiting a great episode of Doctor Who. This is also
the 50th anniversary of the show! Saturday I get some new Who and a milestone
episode to boot!
Then I watched the Night of the
Doctor, an online prequel to the Day of the Doctor which premiers Saturday
night.
This seven minute short starts out
great. It has Paul McGann reprising the 8th Doctor. How cool is
that?! It even takes place during the Time War. Once again cool beans! The
problem I have is the ending. Here we get a look into who John Hurt is playing
in the 50th. It really left a bad taste in my mouth. The big shakeup
at minute 6 something, really warps the Doctor Who universe. Yes, I know it will
all be made clear this weekend. Whatever this was about, or will
it?
Steven Moffat has written some great
Doctor Who stories, however, he has also written some drek. It looks like he
wrote this as well .
See for every Library full Vastha Nerada there is another Amy Pond-centric story. For every Impossible Planet/Satan Pit, there is
another awful appearance by River Song. Pond and Song; these two ladies almost
drove me from the show with their annoyance, neediness and bad story lines. I am
now going into this special a bit skeptical since I have been burned a lot by
Doctor Who episodes the last few series. The stories have fallen off a bunch.
Sure there are always a few weak episodes, but the last few years have been hard
to watch, get excited about and care about the side characters involved.
The 50th isn’t all bad
news though. I mean David Tennant is playing the Doctor again and he was great
at it. Seeing Tennant and Smith play off each other should be a good time. Plus
Billie Piper is back, but I highly doubt she is Rose Tyler at least not the real
Rose. That would just be silly now wouldn’t it? How will this non-Rose affect
the 10th Doctor (or is he the 11th)? Hopefully there is
still some of that on screen magic between these two. Plus John Hurt is a
descent actor (Kingdom of the Crystal Skull aside) and will hopefully bring
something good to the table besides a great British voice.
There is also some Zygon stuff going
to happen. Cool to see these squid guys back again. I wonder what they are up to
besides no good. Hopefully they will get some more screen time in the future.
The Daleks, Cybermen and the Angels have been over used as of late. Give us some
Zygons, Autons, Ice Warriors and always more Sontarans!
A ton of speculation is out there
and I’m staying away from it and just concentrating on my own little bubble. We all know that what has been shown in clips, and it is not what it
appears to be. It never is. I really just want a good story, a little comedy and
a some crazy space science. What I hope won’t happen is more tweaking of the
Doctor’s known history, another reboot of the universe, anything with anyone
named Pond or Song or a pandering story. Just don’t give us something like
Lets Kill Hitler, Planet of the Dead, any episode with a
famous historical person (those are always awful like holodeck episodes on Next
Generation) or various and shoehorned cameos. I want an episode like Dalek, Bad Wolf, Army of Ghosts/ Doomsday, Blink, Silence in the Library, Family of Blood, Turn Left, Journeys End/Children of Time.
You know a good fun and exciting story. Is that too much to ask for this event?
Well, it's the 50th anniversary of the longest running tv series on this planet - and i bought tickets to watch it in 3d in an cinema here in germany, so it better be totally awesome or i'll go and kick Moffat in the nuts...
