Necron HQ review, The Infinite-ly useless

Trazyn, the Infinite, is an ancient Overlord. He is known as a chronicler of history and a preserver of rare antiquities. He is known to be quite the hoarder. Trazyn is also unlikely to explore the galaxy himself but his desire to gather more stuff forces him to go out from him cluttered basement and into the stars. He wouldn’t risk the chance to miss that one item that will complete his set of rare Imperial trading cards or Eldar Precious Moment figurines. However, he is known to often send substitutes of himself to do his work for him to save him the hassle. If these surrogates die, no big, he just downloads into another if it will get him those last three Pokemon cards, that monkey's paw or the lost ATARI 2600  E.T. game cartridges he needs.

"I sell forbidden objects from places men fear to tread... I also sell frozen yogurt, which I call "frogurt!"

Well this is the first of the real Overlords. No more of this Cryptek HQ stuff. He comes with a WS 4, BS 4, strength and toughness 5, attacks and wounds of 3, initiative 2, leadership 10 and a 3+ save. He has the Necron junk, is ever living, is a Phaeron, and has Surrogate Hosts and “Excellent! Another piece of the puzzle.” rules. He is armed with mind shackle scarabs and the Empathic Obliterator. He also unlocks the Royal Court for use and may purchase a Catacomb Command barge. All this and he only costs a terquasquicentennial's worth of points.

Surrogate Hosts- allows Trazyn to be infinite. When he loses his last wound or is removed from play, roll a D6. If a 2+ is rolled Trazyn comes back into play. Well he can be replacing a Cryptek, Lord, Overlord or Lychguard model. He replaces the chosen model. He will have his stats, but only the current wounds of the replacement model. This is lame, but fair. I mean why allow him to comeback with more than one wound right? He will only allow a kill point if he fails to return on a 2+. I guess this is a fun ability, but makes you take Lychguard in his army. Because is anyone going to sacrifice any of the other models he can replace? Probably not.

"Excellent! Another piece of the puzzle!"- allows for Trazyn to claim objectives. Hooray a HQ scoring unit?

Empathic Obilterator- is his wacky close combat weapon. If he kills one or more models in combat then this thing fires off a psionic shockwave. What is that? Say he kills a tactical marine. Well then the staff thing goes all wonky and tries to kill all other tactical marines. So....before assault results are final roll a D^ for every model that has the same name as the model killed by Trazyn. On a 4+ every model in the combat with the same name (important here) takes a wound. Any extra dead guys count toward the combat resolution. WOW AWESOME!! It is like purifiers but at the end of combat.

Well not really. This is not a power weapon, so there will be saves and then there is wound allocation on top of that. There are ways to make wounds caused by this weapon not count. Tricksy and wicked, but possible. Also it is the name, so put a wound on an upgrade model to the unit and if he dies, then nobody else will (for example Sergeants, Champions etc). Any low armor save army should worry, but how many of them are there these days? Everyone is in power armor and not afraid of this weapon.

This is an item that had people losing their damn minds pre-codex release! It was the ultimate weapon of mass destruction! Trazyn was going to lay waste to entire armies with this thing! Well once the truth was revealed.....it blows. How often is Trazyn being used? Seems like......never.

Well for  the points, Trazyn is nowhere near worth it. A boring Overlord is just as good, no wait better. They can take a S+2 non- power power weapon and are way cheaper. Now I know Trazyn can; objective grab, replace models to not die (maybe can still roll that 1) and has a minor potential to wreck a unit in close combat, but he is still pretty useless for a HQ. You have to take a 200+ point unit along with him, if you want to take advantage of his downlaoding into bodies power. Well, you could just burn through your Crypteks or other Lords, but those are cheaper and actually serve a real battlefiled purpose. He doesn't even seem like a fun choice to try and use.
