End of the Chaos Marine codex review

This ends my look at the Chaos Marine codex. I have to say it is a real mixed bag.

The artwork is not awful, but not great. There is also a lot of artwork from previous Chaos codices. The recycled artwork makes me sad. The new drawings are a push. For every good pic there is a poor pic. I guess the upside is that it is still better than all the artwork in the Chaos Demons codex and the continued drek of John Blanche.

The rules are pretty tight and well written. There should be no arguments about what the units can and cannot due. The Warlord Traits are marginally better than the main rulebook versions. The Chaos Boon table and every rule tied to it is tight. However, I still find this table and forced use as 100% pure grade baloney.

The wargear is what it is. There are impressive, situational and damn useless bits of gear. This is the same as it always is when it comes to wargear. There will be the favorites for everyone and must haves per the internet. This section is a push.

The units are many and varied. The changes to the old units are acceptable. There are a lot of useless and questionable units in this book. The Hellbrute, Fiends, Warp Talons and Maulers are just drek. They look to be big piles of fail and would have been better in a previous edition. The inability to quickly deploy this army is also sad. Here is another Chaos codex without the drop pod (or some version of it) option. This is still depressing and I will always wonder only one army in the game can arrive safely in a big metal phone booth. Finally, there is the damn stupid looking dragon plane. This is all that anyone cares about in this book. This is a super polarizing unit and it should be for what it can do. This unit makes the codex a one trick pony. The reason to take this army now is to cram three of these fliers into your force and then just fill in the blanks with misc stuff. Then there is the even better of calling your allies from...the Chaos codex and then cramming a fourth of these demon planes into the army. It is legit, but it is a dick move.

Even though this was the first 6th edition codex (and it now old and useless for most) it is still fairly solid. The ability to have fearless scoring units from the troop section, or moved from elites, is stellar. The price reduction of traitor Marines, Raptors and bikes is great. The update to spawn, to make them go from zero to pseudo pod hero, is good stuff. Throwing in a Chaos Techmarine, Cultists and an evil Chaplain is fantastic for building some great themed forces. All these bits are balanced out by the equal amount of bad that is useless, over-priced, even awful looking units and a random chart forced upon me.

Sadly, this codex is reduced to an overpriced hardcover advertisement for getting as many flying fire breathing monster planes on the table. The curse of the first new codex of the new edition continues………..
