Chaos review #25 the swordsman

Lucius “the Eternal” is still floating around the HQ slot for Chaos. He is the best of the best when it comes to close combat Chaos Marines who favor Slaanesh. He still has the same sad tale of being a super swordsman. If he does get killed in close combat, the slayer of Lucius will eventually morph and change into Lucius (insert Circle of Life song here). I still find him pretty blah and question why he is still a HQ choice.

Aright, Mr. “the Eternal” has WS 7, BS 5, strength and toughness 4, initiative 6, 3 attacks and wounds, leadership 10 and a 3+/5++ save. He comes armed with a Doom Siren (so…BS 5 not needed), power sword, usual grenades, Mark of Slaanesh, Lash of Torment and the Armor of Shrieking Souls. He has the Champion of Chaos, Independent Character, Fearless, Vets o’ that tedious War, and the Duelists Pride rules. He also unlocks Noise Marines as a troops choice. Lucius cost 165 points.

Lash of Torment- gives Lucius’s attacks the Shred rule (re-roll wounds) and reduces the attacks by 1 of anyone in base-to-base with him.

Armor of Shrieking Souls- gives him a 3+/5++ save, and some extra defense. When Lucius makes armor/invul saves count them. For every save made the unit that hit him takes the same amount of S 4 AP2 wounds. These auto hit and allow no cover saves. Great! Grand! Wonderful! A quasi- Soul Blaze ability.

Duelists Pride- is an ability that forces Lucius to fight up or down to his opponent’s skill level. When in a challenge. Lucius's attack characteristic becomes the same as the WS of the opponent. Thus if he is fighting a standard Marine sergeant, he will have 4 attacks. If he is fighting a Bloodthirsther, he will have 10.

For me, Lucius brings very little to the Headquarter table. He does come armed with a Doom Siren which is pretty boss! Sure he unlocks Noise Marines, but so can a much cheaper Chaos Lord with a Slaanesh tattoo. He should be descent in most challenges, except when fighting anything over toughness 4. With the name “the Eternal” it would make sense to give the guy the Eternal Warrior rule, but that is too much to ask. Plus it would probably drive him up to 200 points or more. Lucius just looks and feels more like he should be a unit upgrade than an HQ. He doesn’t look or sound like leader to me. Why not give him the same treatment as Lukas the Trickster? Then maybe I would consider using him, but as a pure HQ he is a waste of points and time for me.

Who is Lucius's biggest fan? This guy.

  1. Small correction: The Armour of Shrieking Souls yields S4 AP2 hits with the Ignores Cover special rule upon each successful save.

  2. Also, the Shred rule means he's wounding T4 75% of the time, T5 56%, and T6-7 31% of the time. Against T3 he's wounding 88% of the time, which is pretty decent. And his BS5 can be used to hurl his stock of grenades, although I'm pretty sure that given the range you're better off using the Doom Siren.

  3. Thanx for correcting me with the AP2 bit.
Even with the math breakdown I still find Lucius lacking. The Doom Siren is really the only appealing thing about him for me.
