Fear to Tread review

This book jumped out me when I was perusing the local book depository. I had heard nothing about it and quickly grabbed the one copy they had. The Heresy stuff is finally getting back on track and they have been hitting the big stuff I want to read about.

This book covers the grand plan to keep the Blood Angels busy while Horus does his galaxy burning bit. Well there is more than just that, but it is the crux of the novel. The Blood Angels are doing there thing and killing some aliens and then those aliens pop-up in another system years later. Well they are told to go kill them off, after they thought they had. That leads them down a fun little road that Horus and his new Chaos buddies have prepared. What follows is a nice little journey through another part of the 40K universe staring some of my favorites.

Some of the higher points------------

The pre-Heresy comraderey between Sanguinus and Horus was good. It was refreshing to see two Primarchs that actually got along, weren’t brooding or acting like a-holes to one another.

It seems the Red Thirst (aka Black Rage) was popping up prior to the death of Sanguinus. You also get to see the why/how the Red Thirst eventually becomes so prevalent.

A color pattern appears and there is a bit of an insight as to why.

What the hell is Fabius Bile doing popping up in this book?

A whole planetary system that was warped by Chaos! It makes Ego “the Living World” look like a bitch!

The Nikea Edict…well who really cares about that?

Khorne’s first choice for his chosen Berzerkers was........

Demonettes, Fiends, Bloodletters, Bloodthirster and those ever present swarms of Nurgle’s flies all make an appearance. Nice to see proper demons instead of the amorphous warp spawned stuff in the other novels.

Speaking of demons….. Ka’Bandha is all his angry glory!

There is so much BLOOD!

I really enjoy Demons bantering and seeing their crazy plans unfold.

The making of and identity of…….

Those pesky Word Bearers are messing in everyone's business again.

The epilogue is fantastic!

Now there are a few lame-o moments such as the Tinker Bell-esqe saving scene. "If we all think and wish really hard we can save........". There is also Sanguinus being a bit emo over his Legion and the Marines that comprise it. We once again, get humans that tag and appear only to be forgotten (or worse) later.

This is another great addition to the Horus Hersey right here. This is the second Hersey book written by James Swallow and it much better than his first "Flight of the Eisenstein." That was an unfortunate story that had to be told, but what a snorefest it was. If you are a fan of  the Hersey then this should not disappoint!
