Juliet Starling-zombie hunter? |
I picked up Lollipop Chainsaw yesterday. Why? Well simple, it has a zombie hunting chainsaw wielding cheerleader as the main character. That alone had me hooked. Second, it had a play style similar to Devil May Cry (the original game, the fun one). Third, it looks over the top ridiculous. Fourth, I’m a creature of habit. And finally, it has a zombie hunting chainsaw wielding cheerleader in it.
It is everything I expected and wanted from a title called, Lollipop Chainsaw. It is full of crass humor, violence, a mix of pop/rock/metal and a scantily clad buxom heroine. You know, stuff that I still enjoy.

The plot is typical, a doucher summons zombies and someone else destroys them all. The manner in which you wipe out the zombie menace is done with an upgradeable chainsaw, cheers, kicks and pom poms. You are in control of Juliet Starling a member of a renowned monster hunting family. On her 18th birthday (see the sex jokes are legal and no creepy that way) this zombocalypse occurs in her town, starting at school. You start dispatching the undead. Along the way: you grab your boyfriends severed head to use as comic relief and occasionally as a weapon, meet your sensei, family members, friends who have turned into zombies and some eccentric zombie end level bosses.
San Romero is the high school, a nod to crazy old zombie loving George. |
The game play is very reminiscent of the old school button mashing beat’em ups. There is something very fulfilling when you just mash button combos to cut a swath through a horde of ravenous flesh eaters. There are a few timed button quasi-mini games in here as well. There is little skill needed to play this game and if you still have trouble you can even switch the difficulty. There are also upgrades to buy that include: moves, buffs, art, music and outfits. Yeah you can play dress up with Juliet, and who didn’t see that coming. I will admit that I will probably grab the Shiro (from Deadman’s Wonderland) outfit, since she has become a new anime favorite.
An Ash outfit? Damn that would have been cool! |
Shrio outfit, minus the crazy babble |
The rest of the game is easily summed up as weird, or maybe over the top? There is a ton of violence in this game. However, instead of blood spraying everywhere from decapitating a zombie, sparkles shoot out their neckhole. When arms and legs are removed there are hearts and rainbows that drip everywhere instead of blood. All the while you are swinging a bedazzled chainsaw around. There is a ton of pop culture lines and references here as well as over the top crass humor. There are a ton of dick, fart and boob jokes. That should be obvious for the look and title of the game.
RemovE their heads to release the glitter! |
This game is everything I expected and nothing more. It is a great mindless button masher. It is the perfect game to play while waiting for something else to release. It also has some great weirdness that I appreciate. If you are a fan of beat’em ups, toilet humor, zombies or the just plain wyrd: then grab Lollipop Chainsaw. I would recommend a rent though; a buy is only for the truly twisted. The only thing I would warn against is don’t go into this thing expecting something that the title doesn’t infer. If so you will be sorely disappointed.
Yeah it is pretty awesome!
