John Wick 2 and Lego Batman

While everyone else does the mandatory Valentine stuff today, we did our version of it this past weekend.

A six mile hike, dinner and couple of movies. 

 

The first was John Wick: Chapter 2

If you haven’t seen John Wick, then do yourself a favor and watch it! If you are a fan of gun play, revenge tales, a lot of action and a very light script: then it will not disappoint. Plus the response of John Wick to the horrible event in the beginning of the film, is how would want to react if the same thing happened to me!

The second film starts not long after the end of the previous. The plot goes something like this…….

....Crash, punch, punch, punch, plot point, explosion, pew, pew, pew, pew, pewpewpewpewpewpew, blam, blam, blam, street fight, small plot point, pew, pew, pew, stab, stab, neck snap, stab, Laurence Fishburne, “How’s retirement John?”, pew, pew, pew, pew, pew, pew, pew, pew, grapple, pew, pew, and a final pew.

A two hour action movie that; has a body count that probably doubles the first John Wick, doesn’t drag for two hours, has more action insanity than the first movie and was just a lot of damn fun!

Sunday we took the kiddos to see Lego Batman. I was not super interested at all, but kids and family outweigh my personal wants/needs.

After the first 10 minutes I found myself actually really enjoying what was going on in this movie. Seriously, it is just a movie with Legos and the Batman license. Right?

Oh, Hell not it is more than that!

It is a Batman movie with good comedy hits and the entire Batman franchise to work with and play off. If anything was scared I’m not sure what. They hit all the Bat films going back to the 1966 Adam West stuff. They hit the comics. They throw in the animated series both original and Beyond. Now toss in a bit of Justice League as well. If that wasn’t enough, there is a healthy dose of other Warner bros. properties as well. All in Lego form.

The general plot revolves around Bats and Joker, Batman’s loner and family issues, the whole team-up with Robin, and learning a lesson about family, teamwork, friendship and drivel like that. It sounds like a by the numbers animated film and it was, but it was damn fun at the same time.

 

See Joker wants to be Batman’s biggest villain. Batman is busy doing I don’t need anyone or anybody so you don’t matter bit. Joker’s feelings get hurt, so he wants to prove to Batman he is his worst and best enemy. He goes to the Phantom Zone to recruit all the big bad guys to team-up under his banner and defeat batman. This is where we get: the worlds of Harry Potter, Wizard of Oz, Dr. Who, Gremlins, Jaws, Jurassic Park, King Kong, Clash of the Titans, Lord o’ the Rings, the Matrix and a bunch more franchise villains all in Lego form coming after Batman.

Then throw in like every Batman villain ever ranging from the A to Z list. Yeah we get all the popular rouges and then Eraser Head, Cat Man, Condiment King, Polka Dot Man, and Egg Head just as a pittance of the examples of bad Batman goons making and appearance.

There is a healthy dose of comedy from cerebral to slapstick.  Even better throw in comedy hits based on anything from Batman franchise over the last 78 years. It all makes for a really damn funny and enjoyable movie based around Lego bricks.

I would say that every fan of the Batman should see this. It looks dumb. It looks like a shameless toy plug. Well it both of those, but it also so much more too.
