They get the Old Canuckle-head finally?!

2014-Death-of-Wolverine.jpg

They finally are going to get the old Canuckle-head. It appears Wolverine will finally be dying/killed in the comics.

I have watched my favorite character: have his adamantium ripped out, put back in, become a team leader, a teacher, a samurai, become Death, turn into a feral looking Beast-like guy (only to have that phased out quickly and quietly because it was fraking stupid), lose a hand (Age o' Apocalypse), get the girl and lose the girl time and again, become a one-eyed patch wearing cliché, join the Avengers, be in almost every comic during the 90's, have his memory restored, lost, and rewritten, discover his claws are bone (and easily snapped off every other issue), discovered his origin, watch him kill his way through ninjas, goons, henchmen, numerous B-D listers and even kill Sabertooth (only to have that negated too) and finally saw him become pretty horrible  parent. I know I'm forgetting a ton, but seriously who can remember all this stuff?

Even through all this, he has never been killed. Well that is until now, or actually soon.

Marvel has announced the story arc “3 Months to Die”, which will see Logan die. Well it will first see him lose his healing factor and then he'll bite the bullet in wait for it...."The Death of Wolverine" mini-series. What a catchy title huh? So why are they finally killing off the guy who is the best at what he does (and that ain't cooking chili folks)?
Why are they announcing it? Are the numbers slipping for the Wolverine title?  Do they need to kill him to boost sales?

I have my theories. First is that he is going to die in the cinema. Marvel likes to try and keep the comics and movies similar, to help new readers jump on board after watching the films. So is he biting the bullet in Days of Future past this summer? Possibly.

Second is why not kill him? I mean: Supes has died, Cap has died, Professor X, Green Lantern, Magneto, Jean Grey, Gwen Stacy, Norman Osborn, Jimmy Olson, Lex Luthor, Bucky, Punisher and on and on and on. Unless you are Uncle Ben, Abin Sur or a Wayne parent, then your death is really meaningless.  They can kill Wolverine and he'll just be back within four months to a year.

Third, is Hugh Jackman buys the farm in Days o' Future Past this summer. See Marvel used to like and keep a bit of familiarity between the comics and the movies, especially around release time. This way they can  get new reader jumps-ons after they watch said comic book film. Plus he has been playing Wolverine through six movies and a cameo. He is probably tired of the part. This is a long shot, but it is a theory.

Retraction: I see that there will be a third Wolverine stand alone and that will be the last for Hugh Jackman. I knew it would be a longshot.

Fourth is a quick money grab and press Superman's death proved that. Look at what that caused in money and pop culture hysteria. Unfortunately that was a long time ago and Wolverine is nowhere near the comic icon that Superman is. Sure he has been around in comics for like 40 years, but is that enough to get people to really run out and grab the tale of his death? Still it will cause a stir in the geek world. Or will it?

Is Wolverine still as big a deal as he was in through the 90's when he (and Ghost Rider/Punisher/Spidey) seemed to be everywhere? Will the story be worth a crap?

Supposedly he is losing his healing factor and then he has to survive without it. Guess what he doesn't. Will he go out like a crazed warrior looking for a last hurrah? Will he die a tragic death? Hell, will lung cancer get him from all those cigars and no healing factor to help? Whatever gets him will only be temporary. Wolverine won't stay dead for long and eventually all this and the "hero’s death will have ramifications throughout Marvel’s line “  as promised by the editors/writers will be forgotten.

At least it will give collectors something to jump on in hopes of a good investment. Myself, I'll wait for a few months and see if any of my thoughts of how he dies come to fruition. I'm curious, but not enough to run out and grab these issues. Guess that is sad since he was my favorite comic character next to Spider-man.
