Anchorman 2 continues the tale of Ron Burgundy and his news crew. They have their trials and tribulations throughout and a large dose of comedy along the way. This film has a lot of laughs, unless you dislike Will Ferrell’s brand of comedy. If that is the case then what is your problem?
I wondered if the same enjoyment would come with watch Ron Burgundy again, and it did. There are some real comedy gems here. However, there is some meh! moments and a bit of the unnecessary as well. The one liners and back-and-forths are plentiful and many have been added to my personal lexicon. The physical comedy is what it is. You know there will be some and it is enjoyable to some and useless to others. The physical gags mostly fall in the meh! category. Then there is the head scratching and “What the hell was that?” stuff that almost falls into the Tim and Eric type comedy that I despise. It is a mixed bag of humor and it works. I spent more time between various bouts of belly laughing and snickering than anything else.
That being said, there were a few lulls in the film. The first came with Kristen Wiig. I really don’t find her funny. I understand she is crazy popular and has a fan base that believes she is the cats pajamas. I am not part of that. I don’t get the draw she has and I just don’t find her funny. Her appearance just makes me sad.
This ties into the next bit which was the Brick Tanland love story. Yes Steve Carrell is a big deal in the world of funny, and has become a much bigger celeb since the first Anchorman. He needed more screen time and it happened. Sadly it was a love story between him and Kristen Wigg. So every time he was doing stuff she was there too. It was a bit of a comedy dower for me there.
Then there was the shark saving story and song that wasn’t funny, but to others it was probably hysterical.
Finally there was the is another new team gang fight that was a mix of: too many cameos, just plain wryd moments , actual funny and bit of random uselessness. That being said there was a minotaur (which lead to a great one-liner), Brick with a trident, the ghost of Stone Wall Jackson (who devours souls) and Wes Mantooth. This bit could have been cut and it wouldn’t have made a difference.
Anchorman 2 The Legend Continues is not as funny as the first, but it is still full of great comedy. If you are a fan of Ricky Bobby, Buddy, Jackie Moon, Brendon then you will enjoy the continuing tale of the best damn news anchor, with salon quality hair, in the business.
