Into Darkness review

Alright if you are a nerd and haven't seen this yet, then go! If you are a normal and haven't seen this yet, then go! Well, watch the Star Trek reboot then go see this!

The film opens with the Enterprise crew up to some shenanigans on a class M planet. Then jumps to London to see Doctor Who's Mickey "the idiot" dealing with a sick kid, meeting some strange man, getting a cure for his daughter and then blowing himself up along with a Star Fleet building. Throw this along with Kirk getting a quick demotion, then promotion as this bad guy, kills a mess of Star Fleet captains. Admiral Robocop wants this guy dead, so the Enterprise is sent on an off the books mission to kill this creep-o. Then the fun and games begin!

The film takes through a series of similar events that fall into a huge bit of similarity. The action sequences are frantic, the pacing is good, there seems to be a bit more dry humor, there are a lot of nods to the series and the Shatner-verse, and the story is a nice bit of new with just enough re-hash. It was a really good movie.

Now, this is still not my father's or even my Star Trek, but is was never supposed to be. This is a young crew for a 21st century audience. The old Star trek movies are really slow by the Hollywood standards of today. The target audience is a much younger crowd and they like movement and action. I don't disagree with this choice. I like having the crew actually doing stuff besides a lone fist fight, talking and some standing. This is as much a Star Trek movie as it is a summer action flick. The two are mixed very well. I look forward to the third installment in this franchise as it is easily becoming some of the best stuff in the Star Trek movie wheelhouse.

I stayed away from the Interweb, much like I did for Iron Man 3, so I knew almost nothing about the events or characters of the film. It made it so much more enjoyable. This is definitely something to continue and I do recommend. It does make for a more enjoyable experience to not be sure where they are going/doing.

TURN BACK FOR THERE BE SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!

A last bit of the goods and bads from the film

The great stuff in the movie.........

Not my or my dad's Klingons, but still awesome!

KLINGONS!! KRONOS!! BAT' LETHS!!
A hope that the next movie will be Klingon heavy
Hey Dr. Carol Marcus
Breaking the Prime Directive-it always has to be done at least once by every Star Fleet captain
KHAN!!
Having Khan as the bad guy, and figuring it out before the reveal was great!
Bones, Kirk, Spock and Scotty are spot on great actor choices
Harold/Kumar- Sulu gets a turn in the captain's chair
Dreadnought class Star Ship
Kirk getting some tail (literal and figurative)
The Beastie Boys are still popular in the 23th century
The ship has an android on the bridge (or some sort of alien robot guy)
Various quotes that we all know and love
They didn't blow up the Enterprise....yet- another must do by every Enterprise captain
TRIBBLE!
The real Spock
So much face punching and head squishing
Cryo-tubes in photon torpedoes! Oh Admiral Robocop, how you have fallen!
A single man Lobo/Cable-like fraka fraka cannon used to shoot down Klingon planes
Lee Reherman, from the t.v. show Arena, has a cameo

The bad stuff.....

Hey Dr. Carol Marcus- more for the fact of the doe eye stare or look of confusion always on her face
Breaking the Prime Directive-it always has to be done at least once by every Star Fleet captain
A tribble?
The real Spock- I though Nimoy quit that gig
A demise that came too soon and would not last
A plot point that was revealed way too early
By the gods the Cumberbatch is ugly, but he makes a good bad guy
The fact I remembered Lee Reherman from the t.v. show Arena

You can see the positives are way more numerous than the negatives (and most of the negatives are petty), which places this well into my good movies range. Having knocked out Iron Man 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness, I am hoping for a continuing good summer of films. The June, July and August films have a precedent to live up to.
