Well after the events of Avengers: Age o’ Ultron Thor had
left to investigate the whole Infinity Stone issue.
Ragnarok picks up after his trip around the universe looking
for clues. Sadly he seems to have come up empty and also imprisoned by Surtur in
his realm of Muspelheim (well hopefully that is where this is).
Surtur was voiced by Clancy Brown. A great call there! |
Some chit chat and a fight later and Thor is heading back to
Asgard to deal with Loki who is still impersonating Odin. This leads to Thor
and Loki finding Odin and trying to bring him back to Asgard and to deal with
the coming prophecy of Ragnarok. Sadly Odin has other plans and dies….again.
This leads to Hela, Thor’s older sister/ Goddess of Death returning to takeover
Asgard.
Now Thor has to stop her and rescue Asgard.
Fenris! So cool to throw him into the mix! |
Wait! Along this journey we step into a bit of the Planet
Hulk comic run. Thor ends up on Sakaar dealing with The Grandmaster and his
tournament (gladiatorial combat) of campions. Of course his campion is the
Hulk, who made it to a wormhole while leaving in a quinjet after Age o’ Ultron.
So… of course this leads to the fight we all saw in the trailers. Then throw
Loki, Valkyrie and a scene stealing Kronan named Korg to the movie mix. What do you then get? The
aftermath of said fight turns into an action buddy road trip movie to save
Asgard and possibly the universe!
It all sounds a little blah and silly when you say it out
loud. However, on screen it is nothing but pure comic book joy!
The Revengers |
Ragnarok is full of action set pieces that aren’t overly
long or super spectacle.
Ragnarok is full of some great comedy hits. The cover
everything from amazing word play to physical bits. There is just some great
humor here that flows well and are not forced.
Korg the scene stealer of the film. |
Ragnarok has a delightful soundtrack and a pair of fight
scenes that feature Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song.” A tune that this series
needed to use and finally did. Actually twice to amazing effect!
Ragnarok has Jeff Goldblum and Jeff Goldblum is fantastic!
Ragnarok has some deep comic cuts in it that I had to
reference. That is always refreshing to look back into a series history to see the reference.
Ragnarok has a nod to Beta Ray Bill! A character with a
great look, a fun story and needs to pop-up on the movie screen sometime!
Ragnarok is vibrant and colorful. A nice change from the
more bland and drab color pallets of many comic book films.
Plus there is a ton of jack Kirby look here and it is awesome!

Seriously, if you love comic book movies and don’t enjoy
Thor Ragnarok then you must be deficient on some if not multiple levels.
